The American Federation of Teachers organizes through chartered locals. The one record here is the fall 1963 notice of the Berkeley University Teachers Union, AFT Local 1474, at the University of California. It calls the first fall meeting for October 21, 1963, and invites “all members of professorial status, lecturers, associates, supervisors, librarians, and those who have equivalent academic rank.” Its agenda (faculty medical care, sick leave, retirement contributions, housing and loans) shows a faculty union organizing around pay and benefits.
